SATIPO (Peru): Stingless bees from the Amazon, a species central to Indigenous Asháninka and Kukama cultures, have been granted legal rights in a historic move that marks the first time any insect has been recognized as a rights-bearing entity. Municipal ordinances passed in Satipo and Nauta formally recognize the bees’ right to exist, thrive and maintain healthy populations and habitats, establishing enforceable protections against threats such as pollution, pesticides and deforestation.

The legislation stems from years of research and advocacy by Peruvian biologist Rosa Vásquez Espinoza and environmental groups working closely with Indigenous communities who have practiced meliponiculture, the traditional cultivation of stingless bees, for generations. These bees are among the oldest pollinators on Earth and play a crucial ecological role by pollinating a large share of rainforest flora, including economically important crops.

Researchers documented traditional knowledge and medicinal uses of stingless bee honey, which contains complex bioactive compounds, while also identifying sharp declines in bee populations linked to habitat loss, competition from invasive species and environmental contamination. Peru’s national recognition of native stingless bees in 2024 paved the way for the current local ordinances, which advocates hope will prompt broader national and international conservation efforts.

The new rights framework could compel habitat restoration, stricter pesticide regulation and expanded research, potentially serving as a template for other jurisdictions seeking to embed ecological protection in law.
