Foundation stone laid for Tribal History Museum in Nagpur University

Vidarbha’s tribal culture to be preserved

NAGPUR (Maharashtra, India): The foundation stone for the Tribal History Museum at Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) was laid on Saturday by the Honorable Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Manali Kshirsagar. This museum is being built in the university’s Mahatma Jyotiba Phule educational complex. The tribal culture of Vidarbha will be preserved by the university through this museum.

This being its centenary year, the university received a fund of Rs. 100 crore from the Government of Maharashtra. The museum is being built in the university campus with this fund and with the support of PM-Usha (Prime Minister’s Higher Education Campaign) scheme. The museum, being built at a cost of Rs. 4.43 crore, will provide information about the history of the tribal communities of Vidarbha. Tribal communities constitute 23 per cent of the total population in Vidarbha. This mainly includes tribal communities such as Gond, Kolam, Madia, and Korku of Melghat. Through this museum, the customs, traditions, culture, and life of the tribal communities will be showcased. RTMNU will undertake the task of bringing the culture of the tribal community of Vidarbha to the people.

A press release issued by the university said that on this occasion, Dr. Kshirsagar inspected the construction work and the site of the Tribal History Museum and obtained complete information about the museum. Dean of the Faculty of Anthropology Dr. Shamrao Koreti made the introductory remarks. Prof. Rambhau Korekar of the History Department conducted the proceedings. A large number of teachers, staff and students from various departments of the university were present on this occasion. The program was held at the museum construction site under construction near the Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology of the university. Dr. Kshirsagar, Registrar Dr. Raju Hiwase, Finance and Accounts Officer Mr. Harish Paliwal, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Dr. Medha Kanetkar, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology Dr. Umesh Palikundwar, Senate member Dinesh Sheram, Shri Prathamesh Phulekar, PM-Usha Coordinator Dr. Rupesh Badere, Head of the Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology Dr. Prabhas Sahu, Head of the Department of Zoology Dr. Vandana Dhurve, Head of the Department of Lifelong Learning and Extension Dr. Samit Mahore, University Engineer Vinod Ilme, Head of the Department of Business Management Dr. Rahul Kharabe, Garden Superintendent Praveen Gotmare, Dwarka Meghnani of Dwarka Construction, Deputy Engineer of the Public Works Department Milind Raikwar and other dignitaries were present.

Inspection of Archaeological Museum

Later, Dr. Kshirsagar also visited the Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology and inspected the archaeological museum there. She praised the department for preserving the important historical and archaeological heritage of Vidarbha in the museum. On this occasion, Head of the Department Dr. Sahu informed the Vice-Chancellor about the archaeological artifacts in the museum.
