RANCHI (Jharkhand, India): Jharkhand will soon host the first national-level forest fair aimed at promoting minor forest produce and strengthening livelihoods of forest-dependent communities, including tribal groups and rural households.
This fair is likely to be held in September or October this year by the Forest and Environment Department of the Government of Jharkhand. Minor forest products like mahua, karanj, sal seeds, honey, bamboo, tulsi, amla and tamarind will be on sale at the fair. In addition, there will be an exhibition of medicinal plants, herbal products, natural wellness products and green industries. The theme of the fair will be empowering people through forest-based products, tribal handicrafts and the forest economy. Officials said that fair would prove to be an important initiative in the direction of promoting livelihood enhancement, public awareness, and sustainable development.
The objective of the fair is also to increase the state’s forest produce trade from current rupees 1500 croreto rupees 3000 crore.
Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Sanjeev Kumar held a meeting with officials of various departments on Thursday to discuss the arrangements for the fair. Others present at the meeting were Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests D. Venkateshwarlu, Chief Conservator of Forests S. R. Natesh and Divisional Chief Conservator of Forests Jamshedpur Smita Pankaj, along with officials and experts from various departments and institutions.
