RANCHI: Jharkhand has rolled out a multilingual education program in more than 1,080 schools to improve foundational learning for tribal children by incorporating instruction in their native languages.

The initiative, implemented by the Jharkhand Education Project Council in partnership with UNICEF and the Language and Learning Foundation, aims to use mother tongues such as Mundari, Ho, Kharia, Kurukh and Santali as a basis for early-grade teaching.

The program, which began as a pilot in about 259 schools across several districts, has now been expanded to eight districts, including Khunti, West Singhbhum, Dumka, Sahebganj, Latehar, Lohardaga, Gumla and Simdega.

Officials said using students’ first languages in classrooms helps build stronger learning foundations and boosts engagement and confidence among tribal learners. A UNICEF delegation recently visited classrooms in Khunti to observe teaching practices and student participation under the new model.
