LEH (Ladakh, India): Dr Padma Gurmet, who has been selected for the Padma Shri award for 2026, is a renowned practitioner and promoter of Sowa-Rigpa, the traditional Himalayan system of medicine. He hails from Leh in Ladakh and has devoted his life to preserving, developing, and teaching this ancient medical tradition.

Born into a family with a rich lineage of Sowa-Rigpa practitioners, Dr. Gurmet began learning the system from an early age under the guidance of his father. Over the decades, he has combined traditional knowledge with modern research, ensuring that Sowa-Rigpa continues to evolve while retaining its authentic principles.

Dr. Gurmet has played a pivotal role in institutionalizing Sowa-Rigpa. He is the Director of the National Institute of Sowa-Rigpa (NISR) based in Leh. He was also instrumental in establishing programs for research, education and clinical practice in the institute. His work has strengthened the recognition of this indigenous medical system both nationally and internationally.

Throughout his career, he has remained committed to mentoring young practitioners, documenting classical texts and conserving medicinal plants, ensuring that Sowa-Rigpa continues to benefit communities and healthcare systems. His lifelong dedication to this delicate art of medicine and his efforts to safeguard and promote it have earned him one of India’s highest civilian honors, the Padma Shri.

Sowa-Rigpa is the traditional Himalayan system of medicine, also known as the Tibetan medical system. It is a holistic practice that integrates herbal medicines, dietary guidance, lifestyle practices and therapeutic techniques to maintain health and treat illnesses. Rooted in centuries-old knowledge, Sowa-Rigpa emphasizes balance between the mind, body and environment, and relies on locally available medicinal plants and minerals. It is recognized by the Government of India as part of the country’s indigenous medical heritage and continues to be practiced widely in Ladakh, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, and other Himalayan regions.
