LANSING (Michigan, United States): The mortal remains of James Witherspoon, a member of the Ottawa and Chippewa Indians tribe, who was killed in Ukraine over a year ago, are being brought back to Charlevoix, Michigan, where he grew up.

He was killed in action near village Vozvyzhenka in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk Oblast on 17th January 2025. Russian forces had captured his remains and held them for more than a year. The 28-year old Witherspoon was a member of the infantry platoon with the second battalion of the International Legion, which is a military unit of Ukrainian Ground Forces composed of foreign volunteers. Witherspoon had volunteered to fight in the war to defend what he described as the freedom, sovereignty and ancestral lands of civilians, drawing parallels to the history of Native American people.
