GUWAHATI (Assam, India): A new television documentary series is set to explore the lives, traditions and struggles of Indigenous communities across north-east India.

The series, tentatively titled “The Tribal Voice” will show the everyday realities of these communities, from their rich cultural practices to the challenges they face in preserving their heritage in a rapidly changing world. It seeks to provide a platform for voices that have historically been marginalized, highlighting both the resilience and the diversity of Indigenous groups across the seven sister states.

The first phase of the shooting took place on Majuli Island, one of the world’s largest river islands, in Assam earlier this month.

The series, being produced in Hindi, will capture authentic stories from multiple tribes, including their unique languages, rituals and traditional governance systems. The project also explores the interplay between tradition and modernity, showing how younger generations navigate between preserving their cultural identity and adapting to contemporary societal pressures.

Production for the series has involved extensive fieldwork, with crews traveling to remote villages and forested areas. The filmmakers aim to document festivals, oral histories, agricultural practices, and other aspects of daily life that define the social and cultural fabric of these communities. Through this immersive approach, the series intends to provide viewers with a deeper understanding of the diversity within Northeast India and the complex histories that shape these communities.

The documentary series also addresses pressing issues such as land rights, environmental conservation, and the impact of development on traditional ways of life. By highlighting these challenges, the series seeks to raise awareness about the ongoing struggles of Indigenous groups to maintain control over their ancestral lands and natural resources. It also explores the cultural richness that these communities contribute to the broader Indian identity.

The series aims to inspire dialogue, encourage cultural preservation, and foster a greater appreciation of the Indigenous heritage in the north-east. The series is being produced by Shekhar Bhattacharjee, the founder of Edstead Media, and Dentsu Sports and Entertainment.
