ARMIDALE (Australia): The New South Wales (NSW) Aboriginal Languages Trust has announced the NSW Aboriginal Languages Educational Scholarship Program for the 2025-26 round. Applications are now open.

The scholarship offers grants between $1,000 and $50,000 to Aboriginal individuals to support study, training and research in Aboriginal language learning, teaching and revitalization.

The program, run by the Aboriginal Languages Trust under the Aboriginal Languages Community Investment Program, is part of efforts to implement the Aboriginal Languages Act 2017, which recognizes Aboriginal languages as essential to culture, knowledge and identity. The initiative aims to increase the number of language speakers, educators and researchers and strengthen community language use.

Applicants can apply online until 5 pm on 23 January 2026, with support available for those facing barriers such as remoteness or limited internet access. Funding can cover tuition, resources, specialist equipment, transport and technology, and multi-year support is available for approved courses or research.

Past recipients include individuals pursuing advanced linguistic studies and community-focused language education projects that have produced teaching resources and expanded early childhood language learning.

The program was established in October 2023 to support Aboriginal community-led language education and research, contributing to broader initiatives in NSW to preserve and revitalize Aboriginal languages within education and community settings. Details available on the trust’s web site at www.alt.nsw.gov.au.
