MUMBAI (Maharashtra, India): The government in the Indian state of Maharashtra has decided that during fresh recruitment in the Health Department, doctors and officers will be appointed in tribal and remote areas first. The decision has been made to strengthen healthcare services in the tribal and remote areas of Maharashtra. The order was issued by the Health Department earlier this week.

The order states that during new recruitment drives, as well as during promotions for doctors and officers who obtain postgraduate (PG) degrees during service, appointments will be made in tribal areas first. Vacant posts in other regions will be filled only after all the posts in tribal and remote areas have been filled up.

This decision was made in view of the large number of vacant positions of specialists and doctors in tribal and remote districts for a long time. Over the past year, Minister for Health Prakash Abitkar visited several tribal and remote districts in the state and inspected the functioning of healthcare institutions there. During these inspections, issues such as shortage of specialists, incomplete facilities and vacant posts in hospitals had come to the fore.

It was found that positions in tribal and remote areas often remain vacant for long periods, adversely affecting healthcare services. Therefore, the Health Department decided to prioritize the appointment of specialist doctors in tribal areas.

The government believes that this step will ensure better and timely medical services for citizens living in tribal and remote regions.
