BORACAY (Philippines): The Asia-Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) Indigenous Knowledges Workshop 2026 will be held from June 16 to 20, 2026 in Boracay.
It will be hosted by the University of the Philippines as part of the APRU Indigenous and First Nations Knowledges Network activities. It will be the fourth in the series of workshops and will bring together participating universities and scholars from across the Asia-Pacific region.
The 2026 workshop is titled “Living Knowledge Traditions Rooted in Land and Sea: Pathways to Resilience, Innovation, and Cultural Continuity.” It is designed to focus on Indigenous and local knowledge systems, with an emphasis on their role in environmental stewardship, cultural continuity, and sustainable development. The program is expected to include Indigenous-led knowledge exchange, academic presentations, collaborative discussions, and field-based learning activities.
Boracay, a globally recognized island destination known for its coastal and marine ecosystems, has experienced rapid tourism-driven transformation in recent decades. This context is highlighted in relation to the workshop’s focus, as the event aims to examine how Indigenous and local knowledge systems contribute to addressing environmental change, supporting community resilience, and informing inclusive development approaches in island and coastal settings.
The University of the Philippines serves as the host institution for the 2026 meeting, continuing APRU’s practice of rotating Indigenous knowledge events across member universities in the Asia-Pacific region. The workshop is part of a broader APRU initiative that includes seminars and research collaborations designed to strengthen academic engagement with Indigenous knowledge systems and support cross-institutional cooperation among member universities.
Participation in the workshop is limited to APRU member institutions, and attendance is by invitation and registration through official channels.
