AGARTALA (Tripura, India): The Tipra Motha Party (TMP) has swept the elections to the the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections, winning 24 out of the 28 seats to secure a second consecutive term over the autonomous body.
TMP now has absolute majority in the body, which governs a large part of the northeastern state of Tripura in India.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is part of the ruling coalition in Tripura at the state level, managed to secure only four seats. Other major political parties, including the Left Front and the Congress, failed to win any seats in the council.
The TTAADC is a constitutionally established autonomous body under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. It governs tribal-inhabited areas covering nearly two-thirds of Tripura’s geographical territory and plays a key role in local governance, development planning and administration of tribal regions.
The latest result marks a continuation of TMP’s strong performance in tribal politics. TMP, led by Pradyot Bikram Manikya Deb Barma, has built its political platform around the demand for more rights, development and autonomy for indigenous communities in the state. The party has also been vocal in its criticism of the implementation of past agreements related to tribal welfare and autonomy, raising issues concerning socio-economic development and cultural preservation of indigenous groups.
The TTAADC is responsible for the administration of nearly 70% of Tripura’s geographical area and the representation of around 14 lakh tribal residents. The TTAADC is a major body of local governance with responsibility in a number of developmental and local governance. It is an administrative body with a strong sense of tribal identity.
The 2026 elections were made even more significant as all major political forces like TMP, BJP, Congress and the Left fought independently and did not enter any alliances.
