KOCHI (Kerala, India): Representatives of tribal communities from different parts in the Indian state of Kerala have called for a comprehensive government policy focused on their development, empowerment and protection of rights. The demand was raised during a meeting of tribal representatives organized by tribal collective Thampu here on Tuesday.

The tribal representatives stressed the need for a long-term and inclusive framework addressing education, healthcare, land ownership, employment and infrastructure in tribal regions. They said the government must formulate a policy for tribal empowerment with a vision for the next 25 years, aiming for Vision 2050 as the agenda.

They said existing welfare schemes had not adequately improved the living conditions of many tribal communities in the state. They urged the government to create policies that ensure sustainable development while preserving tribal identity, culture and traditional knowledge systems. Community leaders also sought greater participation of tribal people in the formulation and implementation of policies affecting them.

Kerala has one of the largest tribal populations in southern India, with major concentrations in districts such as Wayanad, Idukki, Palakkad and Malappuram. Several tribal groups continue to depend on forests and agriculture for their livelihood.

At the meeting, representatives emphasized that future policies should move beyond short-term welfare assistance and focus on self-reliance, livelihood generation and protection of traditional rights.

The suggestions made at the meeting will be presented to Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan soon.
