GANGTOK: The Sikkim Legislative Assembly has approved a resolution endorsing the final report of the Sikkim State High-Level Committee, a key step toward granting Scheduled Tribe status to 12 indigenous communities that have remained outside the list.
Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang moved the resolution during the recent one-day session, calling the decision a significant measure to ensure justice and formal recognition for the affected groups. Tamang said the state government approached the issue with seriousness and professional rigor to ensure no community in Sikkim is denied its rightful status.
He criticized previous governments for allowing the matter to remain unresolved for years and said his administration acted decisively by constituting a high-level committee of national experts in November 2024 to examine the issue. According to the chief minister, the committee carried out detailed research and consultations before submitting its recommendations.
The report was tabled in the Assembly to advance the long-pending demand for tribal status. Following the Assembly’s approval, the report will be forwarded to the Centre for further action. Tamang acknowledged the role of committee members, subject experts and representatives of indigenous communities in the process.
