OTTAWA (Canada): Canada’s Assembly of First Nations (AFN) chief has said the Liberal Party of Canada (LPC) government achieving the majority in the country’s parliament is a key opportunity for momentum and action on the priorities of First Nations.

Since the LPC government had secured a majority, it can now move with renewed momentum on First Nations priorities and the Crown’s commitments to the indigenous people, AFN chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak said in a statement issued here on Tuesday.

“This includes introducing strong First Nations clean water legislation in Parliament that includes source water provisions. Across all our priorities, First Nations are putting forward clear plans. We know what needs to be done. It’s time to take action and make investments that create prosperity for all,” she said, according to an AFN press release.

By-elections were held for three seats, and the LPC has won from all three, taking its tally in the 343-member House of Commons to 174, just past the majority mark of 172. This means the LPC government, led by Mark Carney, will not have to depend on support from the opposition parties to get important legislation passed. Carney replaced Justin Trudeau as prime minister last year.

AFN is a national advocacy organization that works to advance the collective aspirations of First Nations individuals and communities across Canada on matters of national or international nature and concern.
