MACKAY (Queensland, Australia): A masterly knock of 93 not out by captain Christina Coulson helped Queensland beat South Australia by 11 runs in their opening encounter in their T20 match in Round 1 of the women’s section on the first day of the 2026 edition of the National Indigenous Cricket Championships (NICC) here on Tuesday.
However, Coulson failed to recreate the magic, exiting for 22 off 26 balls in Queensland’s second outing of the day, which they lost to Western Australia.
In the first match, Queensland beat South Australia by 11 runs. Batting first, Queensland scored 167 for 3 thanks to a sparkling knock by opener Coulson and some loose bowling by South Australia. Coulson scored 93 (66 balls, 14 x 4) and remained unbeaten. Extras accounted for the second highest number of runs – 26 (24 wide, 1 no ball, 1 leg bye), higher even than Grace Abdy, who chipped in with 25 not out (33 balls, 2 x 4). In reply, South Australia could manage only 156 for 3 in their allotted 20 overs. Ella Gustard’s 63 not out (52 balls, 8 x 4, 1 x 6) went in vain as she failed to find support from the other batters. Brenda Tau’s unbeaten 40 (36 balls, 6 x 4) was too little, too late.
In their second outing, however, Queensland lost to Western Australia by 7 wickets. Batting first, Queensland scored 121 for 6. Western Australia wrapped up the game in just 15.3 overs, scoring the required 122 runs for the loss of 3 wickets.
In another match, Victoria beat New South Wales by 76 runs. Victoria scored 176 for 2 in their innings, while New South Wales could manage only 100 for 9 in their allotted overs.
Round 2 of the women’s section will be held on Wednesday. South Australia face New South Wales, Western Australia face Victoria, and Queensland will face New South Wales.
