MUMBAI (Maharashtra, India): The Indian state of Maharashtra will soon have two more tribal study centers, in addition to the three that it already has.

The two new centers are proposed to be set up in Amravati and Gadchiroli, Maharashtra Minister for Higher and Technical Education Chandrakant Patil has said. The centers will function under the universities at these places – Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University (SGBAU) in Amravati and Gondwana University in Gadchiroli, he said.

The state government’s Tribal Development Department will provide financial assistance of Rupees 3 crore to these universities to set up the new tribal study centers, Patil said. The state already has tribal study centers under the universities at Jalgaon, Nanded and Mumbai, he pointed out.

The decision was made after a high-level meeting in Mumbai to discuss setting up of new tribal study centers in the state. The meeting was attended by Maharashtra Minister for Tribal Development Ashok Uike, among others, besides the vice chancellors of the universities in Mumbai, Nanded, Jalgaon, Amravati and Gadchiroli. The tribal study centers promote research and other initiatives for the social, cultural and economic development of tribal communities, Patil added.
