RAIPUR (Chhattisgarh, India): The Hidayatullah National Law University (HNLU) of Raipur will host a two-day online international conference titled “Law, Rights and Indigenous Futures: Rethinking Tribal Justice in a Globalized World” on March 28 and 29, 2026.

The conference aims to bring together legal scholars, tribal rights advocates and policymakers from around the world to discuss critical issues surrounding indigenous communities in the context of globalization. The conference will take place entirely online, offering a global platform for academic and practical discussions.

The event is being hosted by the Centre for Study of Law and Indigenous People of the School of Law and Humanities of HNLU. Research papers, policy briefs, community case studies and ethnographic narratives are invited for the conference.

Among the themes and sub-themes of the conference are Law, Rights and Justice; Culture, Identity and Lived Experience; Human Rights and Public Policy; Climate, Ecology and Sustainability; and Development, Economy and Globalization.

The last date for submission of abstracts is 15th February 2026. Intimation of abstract acceptance will be by 22nd February 2026, while full papers are to be submitted by 15th March 2026. Registration deadline is 7th March 2026.

Details of the conference can be obtained here.

One of the central themes of the conference is the intersection of indigenous rights with national and international legal frameworks, exploring how these communities navigate justice systems that often fail to account for their cultural and historical realities. Organizers emphasize the importance of examining the impact of modern legal systems on tribal communities, especially regarding land rights, self-determination, and protection of cultural heritage. The discussions will also focus on the global challenges faced by indigenous peoples, from displacement due to large-scale industrial projects to the erosion of traditional governance structures.

The conference will encourage participants to explore ways in which legal frameworks can be reformed to better address these challenges. In addition to academic papers, the event will feature panel discussions, workshops, and keynote addresses by experts in indigenous rights and international law. Topics will include the role of international human rights law in protecting indigenous peoples, legal pluralism, and strategies for empowering indigenous communities through legal reforms.

One of the primary goals of the event is to generate ideas and collaborative frameworks that can assist in the development of new, more inclusive policies for indigenous people worldwide. The organizers hope to foster greater awareness and dialogue among participants, paving the way for actionable change in indigenous rights advocacy. The conference will provide a unique opportunity for scholars and practitioners to engage in conversations about the future of indigenous justice in a world increasingly shaped by globalization. The event is expected to be of particular interest to those working in human rights law, tribal affairs, and environmental justice. Attendees will also have the opportunity to explore best practices and successful case studies from across different jurisdictions.
