GENEVA (Switzerland): The 19th session of the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP) will be held from July 13 to 17, 2026 at the United Nations Office at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. The annual session will bring together the seven independent experts of the mechanism along with representatives of UN member states, Indigenous Peoples, civil society, academia and intergovernmental organizations to examine key issues related to the rights of Indigenous Peoples under the framework of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).

EMRIP is a subsidiary body of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) mandated to provide thematic expertise and advisory support on the rights of Indigenous Peoples, including through studies, research-based advice, and assistance to states seeking to implement the UNDRIP.

The discussions will focus on updates from recent country engagements, the rights of Indigenous Peoples in conflict and post-conflict situations, the International Decade of Indigenous Languages, Indigenous Peoples’ rights in the context of artificial intelligence, and enhanced participation of Indigenous Peoples within the United Nations system. The session will also include opportunities for statements, panel discussions, and consideration of ongoing thematic work undertaken by EMRIP.

The Expert Mechanism was established by the Human Rights Council to provide expert guidance on Indigenous rights issues and has since evolved into a key platform within the UN system for advancing implementation of international standards on Indigenous Peoples’ rights. Its annual sessions serve as a central forum for reviewing progress, identifying challenges, and advising states and UN bodies on effective policy and legal measures.
