NAGPUR (Maharashtra, India): The newly elected councilors from the tribal community should make efforts to revive the municipal body’s defunct primary schools in their areas, Dinesh Sheram, member of the Senate of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU), said here on Monday.
He was delivering the presidential address at a function to felicitate the corporators from tribal communities who successfully contested the recent election to the general body of Nagpur Municipal Corporation. The program was jointly hosted by Gond Sabha Pathshala and the Kartik Urav Tribal Multi-Purpose Society. The felicitation program coincided with the Republic Day celebrations in the country.
In his speech, Sheram said that it would become extremely difficult for children from poor families to get an education if the schools run by the civic body shut down. Primary education in private schools was very expensive and the poor could not afford it, he said. If denied education, children from unprivileged sections would be forced into low-paying professions and this would lead to further poverty in the country, he pointed out.
Efforts must also be made to start English medium education in the corporation schools, he said.
The newly elected tribal corporators were felicitated included Raama Uike, Saraswati Salame, Rutika Masram and Madhuri Tekam. Harsha Parteki, a member of Nildoh Nagar Panchayat at the young age of 22, was felicitated on the occasion for getting elected at the young age of 22. Corporator Seema Davre, who was the special guest, was also felicitated on the occasion.
In his speech, chief guest Vijay Dahat called upon the newly elected members to make use of the rights granted by the country’s constitution for the uplift of the people. In his speech, Uike said all members should work together to ensure the development of the city. Saraswati Salame, Rutika Masram, Madhuri Tekam and Harsha Parteki also spoke on the occasion.
On the occasion, Tribal Mirror (www.tribalmirror.com) a web site dedicated to the tribal and indigenous communities, was dedicated to the public at the hands of the guests.
Among those present were retired IFS officer Shivram Bhalawi, along with social workers Prabhulal Partety, Krishna Masram, Maya Warkhade and Vanshri Pandhare-Sidam. Social worker Sharad Kohchade worked hard for the success of the program.
